Great standalone, terrable raid : Western Digital 1.5 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD15EARS

I've bought six of these. They are quiet. After many hours, they are barely warm to the touch. Every other hard-disk drive made can be used as a space heater.

They are a bit slower, adding about 33% to the seek time, but nothing noticeable to data reads. This only matters when reading lots of small files like during boot-up. I use an Intel SSD for my main drive and one of these for data. It is the best of both worlds.

I've found that most computers recognize these drives but must be told to mount them, format them, and assign them a drive letter. (This only needs to be done once.) This is a problem with large drives, not with these specifically. For true ease of setup, get a 1TB drive.

Great storehouse drive, but decreased speed : Western Digital Caviar Green 1 TB SATA III Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive Desktop Hard Drive - WD10EARX

I'm a computer technician who manages numerous client storehouse arrays. I purchased 6 (six) of the Western Digital Wd20Ears drives in April 2011 to fill one array (previous version of the Wd20Earx shown here). Two have failed (accumulative bad sectors) thus far. That's a 33% failure rate within a six month period. Luckily I have these setup in mirrored arrays or the data would have been lost. I have Rma'd one of the drives so far back to Western Digital under warranty. The change drive failed (Click of Death) in less than a week.

I have a friend who manages a data center in South Fla. When I mentioned my predicament he told me he had experienced the same. It's his company's course to purchase only Samsung or Seagate due to Western Digital's failure rate.

Buyer beware with Western Digital.

Great Drive...but hear this... : Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARX

I store numerous Mp3s on duplicate sets of external drives. After upgrading to Usb 3.0, I purchased 2 of these Wd 2.0Tb drives, and a pair of 1.5Tb Wd drives. I had to return Both of the 2.0Tb drives to Amazon for a refund. Neither one was stable in maintaining the Fat table. Both drives were formatted and checked for sector errors prior to copying data, so I started out fresh. Both drives, within 1-2 days started displaying Fat table errors, which required running Windows 7 Disk tools to definite the errors. After a few go-rounds, I decided to return the drives, and Amazon fast and without issue refunded the purchase. I don't know if these drives were field to poor capability control, but they aren't worth the trouble. You will see that other reviewers have had the same problems. regarding the 1.5Tb drives I purchased at the same time, one of them is kind of flakey with the same type of problem, and the other drive is just fine. I've just reformatted and checked the one drive with issues, and am copying data back to it again. If it still acts up, back it goes as well.

I don't know what the question is with these Green drives from Wd, I've used other external Usb drives for years from Wd with no problem. I did mount these drives in a Unitek Usb 3.0 dual docking station. My older Wd 2.0Tb drives (which were enclosed in Usb 2.0 mountings) were removed and located in the Unitek docking stations with no problems at all, so I don't think it has whatever to do with the docking stations -- the drives are just not up to par. Bypass these and buy something else my friends...

Nice Mainstream Upgrade : Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Green SATA II 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD10EARS

I purchased two of these drives to set them up in a Raid 1 configuration in my Dns-323 Nas. However, every time I try to run the Raid 1 selection in the Dns-323 configuration utility, the drive formatting fails. I think myself computer savvy, but I am undoubtedly not an expert. After many hours of investigate I still have not been able to find a solution to set these drives up as Raid 1. Some recommended solutions much to technical for me for me to try. Other reviews I have read simply say that for assorted technical reasons (e.g., Tler physically disabled), this drive should not be used for a Raid setup.

All that being said, I did not have any problems setting my two drives up to run as independent drives in the Dns-323.

I purchased these drives to generate a Raid 5 setup for home storage, turns out these drives have terrible characteristics for Raid because of the "Green" firmware. If you are using these drives as stand-alone drives all should be fine, if you are finding to put together a Raid (software or hardware) look somewhere else, there are plenty of consumer-grade drives that work well with Raid.
