Exactly what I was looking for : ProBox 4 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure for 3.5-inch hard disk drive - USB 3.0 & eSATA

Easily handles my 4 x 2TB drives on eSATA and USB3.0. I tested both interfaces and getting over 100MB/sec sustained reads on both interfaces! I am using this for a Windows Home Server (WHS) and it is perfect since it does not do RAID, so that I can let WHS handle folder duplication instead. I intend to buy another one of these to expand my WHS capacity in the near future.

This is one of the few enclosures I could find that does not come with some kind of crappy (as in low-end) built-in RAID controller. When using in WHS, it is preferable to *not* use RAID and to let WHS do its folder duplication, so this is perfect and cheap for that purpose. Make sure your eSATA ports can handle a port multiplier or you will only see one drive or none.

Cons:

None so far. Documentation was a little weak, but not hard to figure out.

I did think it was broken at one point because its default setting is to power down if it does not detect a connection to your PC. When I switched from USB3 to eSATA, I had to tell it to change interfaces (button on front) or it thinks its not connected and powers down. You can also turn off this auto-sync power setting as well. Once I got that figured out, its been perfect!

Great Drive, Great Performance, But......Watch out...... : Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST2000DL003

I purchased 5 of these along with Synology Ds1511+ Nas from Amazon back in April, 2011 for my home. I can't say about how they perform as internal drives for a desktop or in an Usb/eSata external enclosure, but I can surely state that they work great as Nas drives. I have these configured as Raid6, which means you can lose up to 2 disks and still have your volume intact (but at point you won't have fault tolerance). The Nas I got itself is a high-efficient unit, and combined with these green drives it surely consumes less power than the two servers that I replaced...and I have 5.44Tb of fault tolerant warehouse accessible from my 10 Pcs/Macs.

I saw other reviewers commenting about them not being "high-performance" drives. That is correct, this drive was never intended to be used as your original drive for your system. If you're looking for a high-performance drives, you should surely look for 7,200/10,000rpm drives with 16/32Mb cache.

However, when used in a Raid configuration, these drives will deliver high-performance with whole reduced power consumption. In my Nas I was able to withhold colse to 160Mb/S throughput writing to Nas over gigabit network (and even faster reading from it). There's nothing low-performance about these drives when used in a allowable setting. The drive is also quiet. Standing next to my Nas, I can't hear any drive noise even with 5 drives side-by-side.

Bottom line, don't buy drives purely based on price and capacity. You don't buy Prius for high-performance, why expect high-performance from a "Green" drive? recognize what you're going to do with it, then look for qualifying drives for best result. I would have never purchased this to be used in my desktop (for performance) and neither should you.

Great storehouse drive, but decreased speed : Western Digital Caviar Green 1 TB SATA III Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive Desktop Hard Drive - WD10EARX

I'm a computer technician who manages numerous client storehouse arrays. I purchased 6 (six) of the Western Digital Wd20Ears drives in April 2011 to fill one array (previous version of the Wd20Earx shown here). Two have failed (accumulative bad sectors) thus far. That's a 33% failure rate within a six month period. Luckily I have these setup in mirrored arrays or the data would have been lost. I have Rma'd one of the drives so far back to Western Digital under warranty. The change drive failed (Click of Death) in less than a week.

I have a friend who manages a data center in South Fla. When I mentioned my predicament he told me he had experienced the same. It's his company's course to purchase only Samsung or Seagate due to Western Digital's failure rate.

Buyer beware with Western Digital.

All around great enclosure : Macally Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB 2.0 Storage Enclosure for 3.5-Inch SATA Hard Disk G-S350SUAB2 (Silver)

Let me begin by giving you a brief background on why I switched to this enclosure.

I used to run an Acomodata Usb 3.5 inch enclosure earlier with my 2Tb Hitachi Sata hard drive. Ran it for over an year. This was roughly noise free, running cool temperature-wise even with no built in fan. It had a problem though. It would just hang dead when trying to change a large chunk of Data (Usually greater than 2/3Gb) or burning a whole Dvd. It would also hang on a dead red while synchronizing my iPod. I knew it was the enclosure because the hard drive worked well with enclosures from work.

Enter Mcally Uab2. One other suspect I switched to this drive is because all laptops I have are Macbook with Firewire 800. This is a pricey but nice looking enclosure. Fully aluminium except the lid at the back which is plastic. Premise was smooth and all worked first try. No problem with 2Tb drives or transferring large chunks of data. Works well both with Pc and Mac. Firewire 800 is blazing fast. Here are some of the things you may want to know.

- It is noisey. The full aluminium housing amplifies the noise.
- It gets assuredly warm. Has no built-in fan.
- It will run only one port at a time. Meaning you cant associate a mac and a pc to it. It just stops the Hdd.
- As I mentioned earlier, the enclosure costs as much as a 750Gb hard drive.

So, I am ok with it. Not assuredly jumping in joy.
